Working Smarter, Better Banking and a Handyman You Can Call

Another great Friday at PROs, and three presentations with ideas you could put to work the same afternoon. This week covered working smarter inside your business, getting more out of your bank, and having someone to call when the list of projects around the house gets too long.

Silver Spoon Award: Paul Grynewicz

Congratulations to Paul Grynewicz of Synergy, this week’s Silver Spoon winner for the best 30-second pitch of the meeting.

Paul Grynewicz, this week’s Silver Spoon winner and Business Education presenter.

Paul pulled double duty and also gave the Business Education Moment. His topic was one every owner could use more of: efficiency. Growing a business is not always about finding the next customer. Sometimes it is about running the customers, projects and information you already have better.

Tools That Give You Time Back

  • Scheduled texts. If a message needs to go out first thing tomorrow, write it now and schedule it, instead of trying to remember it in the middle of a busy morning.
  • A calendar that works for you. Google, Outlook or anything else, it should help you control your time, not just tell you where to be.
  • CRMs and spreadsheets. Track the numbers, expenses, mileage and where your work comes from, so you know instead of guess. Paul even breaks spending and activity down by county to see where the company is growing.

And Then, Show Up

Systems only go so far. Paul’s last point was networking: show up, talk to people, tell them what you do. At PROs, at a restaurant or just out in the community, the conversations are everywhere.

The takeaway: working smarter matters as much as working harder, and efficiency shows up in the profit.

Banking That Starts With a Conversation, with Sandy Wassen

Sandy Wassen of Truist.

Sandy brings decades of banking experience, and she started with the personal side: her family, and the pride she takes in her children and grandchildren. Then she walked us through what is changing at Truist, with a renewed focus on the customer experience.

Her view is that banking should be about what you are trying to accomplish, not just opening an account and moving money.

  • The right account for you. Different customers need different checking options.
  • More than one checking account for business owners. Separate accounts help with organization and are part of a smarter fraud protection plan. Think about fraud before it happens.
  • Lending as a conversation. What are you trying to do, what are the options, and what fits your situation? Ask questions before any big financial decision.
  • Financial education. Truist offers resources on saving, borrowing, planning and setting goals.

Her big message: your banker should be someone you can actually talk to, and your bank should be more than a place your money sits.

The Projects That Pile Up, with Vito Sernas

Vito Sernas of Call Grandpa.

Vito brought plenty of personality, a little about his family and their love for the Tampa Bay Lightning, and then a slideshow of the range of jobs he takes on. It was impressive: IKEA furniture and shelving, appliance work, repairs, even a greenhouse build.

From the box to the backyard: one of Vito’s greenhouse projects.

That is what Call Grandpa is for. Every house has things that need fixing, assembling, adjusting or finishing that are too small for a big contractor, or that you just do not have the time or the patience for. Vito handles minor repairs and ongoing maintenance, and he cares about the details that separate “technically finished” from “done right.”

  • Not every home project has to become a major project.
  • Small repairs still need to be done correctly.
  • Regular maintenance keeps small problems from becoming big ones.
  • Sometimes the biggest value is simply having someone you know you can call.

Final Thought

Paul showed how better systems make a business more organized and more profitable. Sandy made the case for a banking relationship that goes well beyond an account. Vito reminded us what it is worth to have a reliable person for the jobs we cannot, should not or would rather not tackle ourselves. That is the best part of PROs: every week, people who know their industries share what they have learned.
